iPad Initiative At Gov. Livingston High School

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston students have been provided with their iPads and are successfully integrating this technology into their daily routines as students. More than 1,000 iPads were delivered and registered to students in early November by the high school administrators and district technology team.

Each student received an iPad, a protective wireless keyboard/cover, charging accessories, and a set of homework instructions. Following the completion of the student registration process, our students also received a completed copy of their registration form with the iPad serial number that should be kept for their records.

The students were asked to complete a brief “homework” assignment with the iPad over the NJEA convention weekend that included syncing their keyboards, “buying” some free apps, and downloading some important documents. These documents included the Student Handbook, Acceptable Use Policy, and Responsible Use Document. Each of these documents contains important information and reminders about the expectations of being responsible digital citizens. This message was also reiterated by Sgt.Tom Rich who presented his program, “Always Connected,” to the entire student body late last month.

A series of mini-lessons were presented to the students to share capabilities and expectations for use of this technology in our classrooms. The content of these mini-lessons can be referenced by students, teachers, and parents by visiting the high school webpage and clicking on the iPad information located in the Quick Links section of the high school homepage.

Many teachers have already incorporated the iPad into their lessons. Additionally, the students have shared exceptionally positive reviews about the process and the capabilities of the iPads. While students are at varying ability levels with the new technology, students are individualizing their learning environment and finding the best way to use this tool to communicate with others, create presentations, as well as use all of the calendaring and productivity tools available to them.
