NEWARK, NJ — In yet another sweep of an illegal speakeasy, police in Newark arrested two women over the weekend for hosting parties and selling alcohol without a license.
On Sunday at 11:45 p.m., police responded to reports of COVID-19 violations at 223 Verona Ave. They found a gathering of people, many not wearing masks, enjoying alcohol and a full soccer game with uniformed players and spectators.
“It’s incredible how once again people put wealth over health,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. “It’s selfish people like this who perpetuate the spread.”

Responding officers observed 150 to 200 adults and children, many not social distancing nor wearing masks, inside the establishment.
Fanny Camas was arrested for serving beers from a concession stand for money without a license. Police confiscated 22 beers and $830 in proceeds from illegal alcohol sales.
