It’s Not Your Bubby’s Kugel

Like a bubby who shares wisdom and timeless advice, Lubavitch Bucks County is seeking the area’s top chefs’ insight this January on the world of kosher cooking. Bubby’s Cook-Off, benefiting Philadelphia Friendship Circle – North and other social and educational programs of Lubavitch of Bucks County, replaces the non-profit’s yearly gala with an innovative and engaging kosher competition with the area’s finest chefs. On January 23, Philadelphians are invited to play “judge” and sample modern Jewish fare being served up for a great cause at Vie. 

For the inaugural event, chefs will go head to head with their best sampling of savory kosher bites.    This year’s chefs include:

The event is co-chaired by Sharon Pinkenson, Joseph Weiss, and William Sasso. Judging this year’s cook-off will be:

·         Hope Cohen, Media Personality, Chef & Author of “Fast, Fresh + Simple”

·         Nancy Glass, CEO, Nancy Glass Productions

·         Rebbetzin Miriam Shemtov, Director, Philadelphia Friendship Circle-North and Co-founder Lubavitch Bucks County


Philadelphia Friendship Circle’s mission is to extend a helping hand to children with special needs involving them in a full range of social experiences. In addition to the cook-off, Lubavitch Bucks County is honoring three of their most outstanding supporters of Philadelphia Friendship Circle - North. Ruben Amaro Jr., general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, and Jonathon & Rachel Levine serve as this year’s honorees. The Philadelphia Phillies have been instrumental through their association with Philadelphia Friendship Circle - North at bringing happiness to the families of special needs children. Jonathon and Rachel Levine are being acknowledged for their work engaging the youth through community service. Sammy Goldstein, an active child member of Philadelphia’s Friendship Circle - North, will be presenting the awards on behalf of the children with special needs being services by the charity.


Bubby’s Cook-Off tickets are on sale now at and are being sold for $175.00 per person. The event begins at 5:30 pm on January 23rd at Vie with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Guests will enjoy an evening filled with the finest in kosher delicacies paired with award-winning Israeli wines. The announcement of the winning chef will take place at 8:00 pm. All of the food from the cook-off will be prepared by the chefs and their crews under strict rabbinical supervision.

The Friendship Circle is a Philadelphia non-profit organization that allows children and teens with special needs to enjoy many of the social and recreational opportunities afforded to the community at large. The organization provides an outlet for children of all ages to participate in community programs to help form lasting relationships within the Jewish community and beyond while teaching about becoming active members of society.
