"It's Time" To Revitalize Downtown

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you not only as a member of the Downtown Beautification Committee (DBC) but as a truly proud resident of Berkeley Heights.  Let me begin by telling you why I wanted to be a part of DBC.  As much as my family has enjoyed our downtown businesses and friendly people, the appearance of downtown does not clearly signify the greatness of Berkeley Heights.

To me, Berkeley Heights is a small-town that has a warm, caring, and affable community not found in many other towns.  The people make up this town!   Everyone is down to earth, not pretentious and we are all striving for the same thing.  It says something about a town when children are raised here and come back to raise their own families. The people here are wonderful... residents and merchants, alike. This feeling is what I would like to capitalize on as we move forward in beautifying our downtown.   I would like anyone who stops by, to shop or visit, to understand what we are all about, through the surroundings of our lovely town.  It would be great to improve some of the facades and create that “welcoming, charming, and timeless” sense that mimics its people.

As a Committee, we are putting together stronger design standards and streetscape criteria for old and new businesses.  A greater visual impact needs to be created in order to draw new businesses and visitors alike to our small inviting town.  Our aim is for downtown improvements to have an historic, traditional feel that will last through decades.

A goal of ours is to raise funds to help enhance our streetscape.  One of these projects is our “Downtown Clock Project”.  The clock has 100 plaques on it where community members can memorialize their family name or local business for generations to come.  The clock will be a historical landmark.  By purchasing a plaque you are making your mark on history as an involved member of this community and helping us achieve the streetscape charm that we envision.   I sincerely hope you will consider contributing to this worthwhile project. At the time of this letter, there are only a few plaques left and it will be a first come first serve basis.  The deadline is April 2nd.  Please go to and click on Beautification Committee to download a flyer.

All My Best,
Julie Lloyd
