SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- The Jersey Animal Coalition is hosting a Halloween-themed “Name Your Own Price” adoption day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The “Name Your Own Price” event will allow adopters to pay as much or a little as they want, volunteer coordinator Melissa Schulte said. The shelter is located at 289 Walton Ave., near the village’s Department of Public Works.

Schulte said that both cats and dogs will be available for adoption. “Our mission is finding these amazing animals fantastic homes,” she said.

The animals will be dressed in costumes to add to the fun and festive environment, Schulte said. There will also be baked goods and a face painter at the event.

“We want the event to be fun and for people to leave knowing how passionate we are about our cause and all shelter animals,” Schulte said.

The event will not only bring awareness to shelter animals that really need a safe and loving home but also help the community learn about the Jersey Animal Coalition, Schulte said. JAC is a no-kill, not-for profit, all-volunteer coalition that was organized in 1989.

The volunteers came up with the event idea, Schulte said. “Studies show properly screened adoptions with waived and reduced fees increase the number of adoptions without reducing the quality of the home,” she said.

Schulte said potential owners are carefully screened by adoption counselors.

“We want to make sure each animal placed goes to wonderful home,” Schulte said. “It is very important to ensure that the animal is a good match for the adopter. Every adopter is different, as is every cat and dog, and finding the right match is key to ensuring a successful outcome.”
