SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Jack Renkens, a national keynote speaker, will give student athletes and their parents a strong dose of reality about the world of college recruiting in what promises to be an eye-opening presentation on “Recruiting Realities’’ on Monday, Sept. 18 at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains.

The free event that is open to the public begins at 7 p.m. in the Union Catholic Auditorium.

Renkens, who starred as a basketball player at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, will share with the audience the lessons he’s learned during many years as a high school and college coach, athletic director and as a parent (his daughter, Brooke, played basketball at Manhattan College).

Renkens founded “Recruiting Realities’’ for the express purpose of debunking the myths and presenting the facts about athletic recruiting.

Renkens has been featured at thousands of schools, on numerous TV programs and at sports camps from coast to coast. In addition, he’s a contributor to several major newspapers and magazines. His message about collegiate athletic recruiting is simple: “It’s a game… Know the rules.”

High school student-athletes that are serious about continuing to play sports in college can never start too early, nor get too much help. However, most students don’t know the recruiting game, NCAA rules or how to get matched with the best college for them. Renkens will clarify recruiting myths and provide tips to parents and facts about athletic recruiting for student-athletes, their families, coaches and school counselors.

“Jack Renkens has been a here a few times, and he’s a wealth of experience and knowledge in the recruiting area,'' said Union Catholic Athletic Director Jim Reagan Sr. “He’s been a coach, athletic director, and was an athlete and parent of an athlete, so he has a lot of knowledge to share with the athletes and the parents about every phase of recruiting. He’s invaluable, and he doesn’t sugarcoat it. He will tell it like it is. We’re very excited to have him come back here.’’
