Jaffe, Westfall-Kwong, King and Harrison Win Race for BOE Seats

November 5, 2013 at 11:12 PM

MILLBURN, NJ -   Emily Jaffe, John Westfall-Kwong and Michael King have won seats on the Millburn-Short Hills Board of Education. The three will serve three-year terms. Michael Birnberg will not return for a third term, finishing fourth in the race for three open spots.

With nearly 94 percent of the votes reported, Birnberg garnered only 1,695 votes, compared to Jaffe’s 2,855, Westfall-Kwong’s 2,664 and King’s 1,767 votes. The three winners will serve three-year terms.

Jaffe and King are newcomers and Westfall-Kwong had been appointed by the board to temporarily fill a vacated seat.

In the race to fill a year-long unexpired term, Chase Harrison beat Rona Wenik with 1,805 to 1,653 votes. Harrison is a Millburn High School student.

The results, which are still unofficial, were reported by the Essex County clerk at 9:40 p.m.

The race for Township Committee was a foregone conclusion, as no Democrats stood for election. Republicans W. Theodore Bourke and Ian Mount will claim the two open seats for the next three years.

Bourke garnered 2,664 and Mount drew 2,431 votes, with nearly 94 percent of the votes reported.

Bourke is finishing his first term and Mount is new to the governing body.

Both were on hand Tuesday evening at Town Hall to learn the results. Fellow committee members Sandy Haimoff and Robert Tillotson, also Republicans, came to wish them well.

Mount said he believes grassroots politics are very important and he is “honored and excited” to join the group.

He said he can represent other young families in town, and he is mindful that residents want their services to be of a high quality.

“I’m looking forward to getting started as soon as possible,” he added.

Bourke joked that he was surprised he had won because his wife voted 21,000 times against him.

He said he is looking forward to his next term.

“We did some good things, but we didn’t accomplish everything,” he said, indicating he wants to continue pushing forward.
