Matrix New World Engineering, Inc., (Matrix) had a featured speaker and was an exhibitor at TransAction 2012. TransAction is the preeminent annual Transportation Conference and Expo that was held at the Tropicanna Hotel and Conference Center in Atlantic City, NJ on April 11th, 12th, and 13th. Last year, transaction drew more than 900 transportation directors, planners, operators, elected officials, municipal, county and state representatives, consultants and administrators from across the region.
James D. Sens, PLS PP, Director of HD Surveying & Mapping, Matrix New World Engineering Inc. (Matrix) spoke on Matrix's newest technology: 3D High Definition Laser Scanning.
Jim discussed real world examples of how 3D high definition laser scanning is used to efficiently create high quality base mapping for transportation projects. Laser scanning provides cost savings by decreasing data collection times and minimizing rail/corridor closures or outages all while creating a safer work environment. Examples of rail and roadway projects will be presented along with a discussion on the cost savings and safety benefits.
Jim has over twenty-five years of experience in a wide variety of land surveying applications as well as experience in the site development field. He is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, and a licensed Professional Planner in New Jersey. His experience includes Boundary Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Boundary line agreements, riparian surveys, environmental surveys, railroad surveys, parcel mapping for railroad and transportation projects, major and minor subdivisions, as-built plans, construction lay-out, aerial mapping and GPS control. He is an expert in network geometry and least squares analysis. Jim has provided expert witness testimony for boundary disputes and litigation, and is a renowned expert on the legal aspects of boundaries and boundary lines analysis as well as the statutes and codes of New Jersey as they pertain to land surveying. In addition, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of land surveying at the New Jersey Institute of Technology teaching "Boundary Control and Legal Principles" and "Boundary Line Analysis."
Jim is a published author and a past President of NJSPLS, Past President of the North Jersey Chapter of NJSPLS and former NJSPLS liaison to the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He holds Memberships in a variety of organizations such as the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) and the National Society of Land Surveyors (NSPS) to name just of few. Jim is a recipient of the Technician of the Year Award from the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors and received the University of New Hampshire Agricultural Alumni Award for Academic Achievement.
He is currently enrolled in the Masters Program in Project Management/Geographic Information Systems at Northeastern University and holds an AAS, Forest Technology from the University of New Hampshire as well as a BS in Surveying Engineering Technology from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
