'Janet's Law' to be Implemented in All NJ Schools

August 7, 2014 at 7:57 AM

CALDWELL/ESSEX FELLS, NJ – “Janet’s Law” is new legislation that will be implemented as of Sept. 1 in all New Jersey public and private schools.

Linda Stanton, marketing director of MCRC Physical Therapy in Fairfield, president of Safe Sports Training Consultants, LLC and a consultant to the Sports Concussion Center of NJ, was the featured speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex, where she explained the act involving sudden cardiac events at schools.

“Starting September 1, 2014 all New Jersey public and private schools K thru 12 are required to have Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) on site in close proximity to the school and athletic fields, the appropriate amount of staff trained in CPR /AED and an emergency action plan in place,” Stanton said.

These requirements have been placed into New Jersey law as a result of a family’s campaign to local communities and politicians ensuring a safer environment for athletes after their daughter, Janet Zilinski,  lost her life to sudden cardiac arrest, according to http://janetzilinski.org/.

According to Stanton and resources provided at www.americanredcross.org , time is critical when concerning sudden cardiac arrest. For every minute the use of an AED is delayed, the survival rate decreases by 10 percent. Having an AED available with trained individuals to perform CPR / AED can dramatically increase an individual’s survival rate.

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.

Waze.

Ever since bridge repair closed a major thoroughfare near my house, the traffic on my sleepy street has increased dramatically.  And it is not by accident that commuters have figured out ...
