On Sunday, January 5 at 10:00 a.m., the JCC of Central New Jersey, located at 1391 Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains, is hosting Mark Russ Federman. Federman is former owner/proprietor of Russ and Daughters, the renowned and beloved appetizing store in the Lower East Side of New York City. He is also author of Russ & Daughters: Reflections and Recipes from the House that Herring Built which tells stories of the famous shop’s origins as well as tales from its many customers. Federman took over the running of Russ & Daughters from his parents in 1978 and turned it over to the fourth generation, his daughter, Niki, and his nephew, Josh, in 2009.
Federman’s book combines a heartwarming and triumphant immigrant saga with a panoramic history of twentieth-century New York, a meditation on the creation and selling of gourmet food by a family that has mastered this art, and an enchanting behind-the-scenes look at four generations of the Russ & Daughters family.
