JCC to Host Annual Spring Jewish Film Festival in May

April 30, 2014 at 12:00 PM

SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD, NJ – The JCC of Central New Jersey will be hosting its annual Jewish Film Festival Spring Series that begins on May 7. All films will be shown at the Digiplex Rialto Theatre on 250 East Broad St. in Westfield.

Four films will be offered in May, including a double feature.  The first, Aftermath, is a tense and gripping thriller that was inspired by the actual events involving a dark period in Poland’s history. The devastating story involves Jews – yet not a single Jewish character appears on the screen. Aftermath will be shown on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The next is a teens’ choice film, The Zigzag Kid, which is based on the famous book by renowned Israeli author David Grossman. The movie chronicles the challenging life of a 13-year old boy Nono Feirberg, who grew up without a mother. Days before his bar mitzvah, he sets on a secret, Hitchcockian mission to discover the fate of his long-deceased mother. The first 20 teens that purchase a ticket to The Zigzag Kid on Tues., May 13 at 7:30 p.m. will receive a $5 concession coupon.

The final film session, scheduled for Wed., May 28 at 7:30 p.m. is a double feature.  The first of the twin bill is The Lady in Number 6, 2014 Academy Award Oscar Winner for Best Documentary Short Subject.  Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust shares her experiences and the importance of music, laughter and how to have an optimistic outlook on life.

The second, Life in Stills, documents the incredible courage Miriam Weissenstein, a 96-year-old woman displayed in saving her late husband’s shop that held more than one million negatives documenting Israel’s defining moments.  The film won the Ophir Academy Award (Israel’s Academy Award) in 2012 for Best Documentary.
