Jed Levy Jazz Quartet to Perform at Christ Church May 17

April 24, 2014 at 8:59 AM

SUMMIT, NJ - The Jed Levy Quartet, a New York based jazz group with an international reputation, will perform at Christ Church, May 17 at 8 pm.

The group will be performing music from its new release on SteepleChase Music, "The Italian Suite", a 10-movement original work by Levy, that contains musical portraits of people, places, and things that made an impression on the composer while touring and performing in Italy.

This will be the first domestic performance of the entire suite, which was premiered in Italy at the Bari International Jazz Festival a few years ago.

The quartet, which consists of  Alvester Garnett - drums, Misha Tsiganov - piano, Thomson Kneeland - bass, and Levy - saxophone, recorded "The Italian Suite" after returning from a month -long tour of Central and South America for the United States Department of State, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.  After their selection for this very competitive and prestigious "Jazz Ambassadorship", the group recorded the "Travelogue" with a grant from the State Department, and gave out 500 copies as gifts to people who were excited by their music in Panama, Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela, and Peru, the five countries they visited.

"The Italian Suite" is Levy's tenth CD as a leader, and his tuneful compositions have been recorded by many other artists such as Eddie Henderson, The Headhunters, Ron McClure, and Jack Walrath.  As a sideman, his credits include Jaki Byard, Don Patterson, Chico O'Farrill, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Jack McDuff, The Temptations, and Mike Clark/Charlie Hunter group.

There will be a pre-concert talk/meet the artist at 7 p.m., with the performance starting at 8 p.m.   Admission will be $20 for adults, and $10 for students.  Tickets can be purchased online at, or at the door.

Christ Church is located at 561 Springfield Avenue. Admission will be $20 for adults and $10 for students.

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
