Jewelry Stolen from Maplewood Home, and More from MPD

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The following items were reported by the Maplewood Police Department

October 1, 2013: Theft; At approximately 2 p.m. a male juvenile was observed removing a package from outside of a Garfield Place residence.  Officers responded but were unable to locate the juvenile.

October 2, 2013: Burglary; Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. entry was forced to a home on Prospect Street and jewelry was stolen.

October 2, 2013: Attempted Burglary; A resident of 44th Street returned home and found that a ladder was removed from their garage and placed against their home.  An unknown individual or individuals attempted to make entrance to a second story window but, were unsuccessful.

October 3, 2013: Shoplifting; At approximately 1:30 p.m., the department was alerted to a commotion at Kasper’s Liquor Store on Springfield Ave. Officers responded and found that patrons were detaining a male that had attempted to shoplift two bottles of liquor.  The male identified as Yamil Lopez, 31, of Newark was arrested and charged with concealing the two bottles in his pants.

All incidents are currently under investigation by the Detective Bureau. Residents are asked to practice good crime prevention techniques and secure their garages and automobiles when left unattended.

Temporary Ice Rink Installed in South Orange's Meadowland Park

South Orange Village has installed a temporary ice rink in Meadowland Park for the winter months inside the tennis court area adjacent to the Baird.

The rink is open to South Orange residents with a current Recreation Department Membership I.D. and their guests. The guest fee is $5 per person per day.

Pedestrian Tunnel at Maplewood Train Station To Be Closed on Monday, Jan. 16

MAPLEWOOD, NJ  - On Monday, Jan. 16, access to the NJ Transit southern pedestrian tunnel (the tunnel closest to Baker St.) will be closed, according to an email from the Township of Maplewood.

The email states that the closure is because "the developer of the Clarus will be making the connection to the storm water system."
