KENILWORTH, NJ - Joseph Gasper, a recent David Brearley High School Graduate, and Eagle Scout, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the “Live like AJ” Scholarship in memory of firefighter AJ DeVito. The annual scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits selflessness, kindness, optimism, integrity, devotion to the community, and helping others, all qualities that AJ was profoundly blessed with his family and friends say. To present the scholarship was AJ's brother and Gasper's former teacher Ben DeVito.
“Joe obtained the characteristics that we were looking for with this scholarship” DeVito stated. “He is a hard worker that is always willing and able to help out others, as shown through his work with the theater department at David Brearley. Joe has constructed sets and worked the lighting board at the high school for all the plays. He also cares very much about his community and the town of Kenilworth as shown through his 2019 Eagle Scout project in which he constructed a shed for DiMario Park.”
DeVito was extremely pleased that as his teacher he was able to see these qualities firsthand. “In class, Joe is respectful to his teachers and peers, helps students that are struggling with a topic, and overall a genuinely nice person. I am proud to give this scholarship to Joe, as I know he will go on to do great things.”
