KENILWORTH, NJ - Four Harding Elementary School students were recognized on October 13, 2020, at the Board of Education meeting for their performance in a promotional video for an art contest. The contest called for art submissions that would help decorate a new book vending machine at Harding.
The student participants were second-graders Devin Singleton, Carly, and Adriana Rivera, and first-grader Olivia Rivera. The video was then shared on social media to solicit participation for the contest.
The idea came from an article that Kenilworth Superintendent Kyle Arlington read about a school that repurposed a machine to dispense books instead of snacks. The article was shared with first-grade teacher Leslie Bedford and with excitement, she acted on securing a machine and reached out to the PTO to assist in launching the project.
The contest was held at the end of the summer and many students submitted their original artwork that was related to Harding or reading. The winning artists’ designs have been selected and are being used to personalize Harding School’s new book vending machine. Once the vending machine is complete, students will “earn gold coins” that are redeemable in the machine for a book of their choice.
