NEWTON, NJ - Ten swim teams from throughout Sussex County challenged one another on Saturday at the 12th Annual Northwest Jersey Swim Invitational, held at the Newton Pool.

The Kittatinny Barracudas placed first both overall and in the girls' events, with scores of 892 and 518 points for each. The Newton Sharks took 487 points for the boys, coming in first.
Margaret Witt, who coordinates the event, said it was the 12th invitational held at the Newton Pool. The Newton Sharks Swim Team sponsored the event.
Witt arrived to begin preparations for the massive event at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, and the heats of swimmers began taking the first plunges into the pool, around 8:30 a.m., with the heats wrapping up after 4 p.m., following the 58 different events.

The crowd went wild for the swimmers, who started from below age 6, and capped off at age 18. There were approximately 250 swimmers who participated in the 58 different events; with each heat within all the events, the number of entries topped over 770.
"These are little swimmers, let's cheer them on," the announcer encouraged during the age six and under backstroke, as five-year-olds swam 25-yards.
These were among the youngest who swam that day, in the varying events.
