SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Big-time milestones come from big time players in big-time games.

The big milestone for the 15th-seeded Lady Tigers (10-12) was and always is to get a win, especially in the Preliminary Round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. They did that and then some with a 50-29 victory over 18th-seeded Colonia (6-13).

Junior Mackenzie O’Brien led the green and white with a double-double including 18 points and 27 rebounds. With that latter statistic, O’Brien reached the 1,000 rebound mark in her career just four days after reaching her 1,000th point. She credits her success to everyone who has helped get her game to where it is now.

“I love this town and the capability it gives me to set goals for myself,” O’Brien said. “My team is one big unit in helping me get to where I want to be in my career.”

“A shot goes up and she is determined to get the rebound,” Corisdeo said. “Nothing is going to stop her and nothing will get in her way. That is the way she is.”

O’Brien also had four assists, four blocks, and two steals. Freshman Anna Gnapp contributed with nine points, six of them coming from the free throw line, four steals, three rebounds, and one assist. With her at the guard position, junior Julianne Ferraro chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Defensively, the Lady Tigers gave up their second lowest points allowed this season. Corisdeo has been impressed with the defensive performance his team has produced over the last couple of games.

“Defense is something we can control ever single game,” Corisdeo said. “We need to make sure we are playing good team defense. They have made it a priority to work on it and the results are showing.”

South Plainfield will move on to the first round of the GMC Tournament on Thursday as they will travel to Edison to face another division rival in the second-seeded Lady Eagles (16-5). O’Brien feels that solid team play will give the Lady Tigers the best chance to win on the road.

“We have to be level-headed and believe that we are the better team,” O’Brien said. “We work as one and as long as we show up ready to play on the court that day, we should be good to go.”
