Lancer Football Kicks off Season with Pig Roast

August 30, 2013 at 4:51 PM

LIVINGSTON, NJ - The first annual Pig Roast for the Livingston Lancer Football team was held on Thursday evening, Aug. 29. While the players and staff sat down to enjoy their pulled pork, The Alternative Press of Livingston had the opportunity to speak with them about their prospects for the upcoming season.

Pat Genova, the longtime Livingston High Athletic Director, was in attendance said that he is certainly looking forward to the start of another season.

“Last year was difficult as the team battled many injuries," Genova said. "We have a great coaching staff lead by Coach (Barry) Kostibos and they have been working since the final game of last year up until the opening day of this year to bring us back to a competitive level. I am very excited.”

Jonny Schreiber, junior half back and linebacker feels that the dedication of the team in the offseason is going to lead to much better results in 2013.   “A lot of our guys gained experience due to their hard work over the summer.  The coaching staff did a great job of making sure the team is ready for opening day this year.”   Schreiber’s goal for the team is to “win the conference, make the state playoffs, and end up playing at Giants Stadium.”

Junior Ryan Cheesman also likes what he sees with this year’s team.   “We got a lot bigger and stronger.  We also added a few new members to our coaching staff that has helped us improve”. Cheesman believes that the team is motivated to win and will continue to work hard the rest of the summer.

Kostibos believes that if his team stays healthy they will be very competitive. “The team has done a great job in the weight room getting bigger and stronger which will translate to a better performance on the field,” Kostibos said. His goal for the team is to “be competitive in every game giving themselves a chance to be successful”.

At the Pig Roast, the Livingston Lancer players and staff seemed relaxed and ready to improve greatly upon a difficult campaign in 2012.  Principal Mark Stern said that it was the first year the team was kicking off the season with a Pig Roast and that he hoped to see it become a tradition.

With returning seniors Jake Rosenbaum and Willie Cardona and starting quarterback Matt Gibbons, they are prepared to put last year behind them as they take steps to a successful season.  The Lancers hope to start the year off strong at home on Thursday Sept. 12 against Lincoln.  That game is followed up by a much anticipated rivalry game on Saturday Sept. 21 against Millburn High School.  Other marquee matchups this season will include Montclair, Bloomfield and Seton Hall Prep.
