Late Second-Half Goal Helps Oak Knoll Edge Summit Girls LAX, 8-7

April 2, 2014 at 8:28 PM

SUMMIT, NJ - Kiwi Comizio scored with 4:42 remaining in the game, and Oak Knoll School went on to defeat the Summit High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team, 8-7.

The game, played on the Upper High School Turf Field, was on a knife edge all afternoon, as the teams traded goals -- and the lead -- throughout.
After Oak Knoll opened the scoring, Summit struck twice, with both goals coming from Catherine Cordrey.  Oak Knoll tied the game at 2-2, but sophomore Callie Humphrey scored, followed by a goal from another Hilltoppper sophomore, Sara Szynal.  At 4-2, it appeared Summit was asserting themselves, but Oak Knoll trimmed the lead to 4-3, only to see Cordrey complete her Hat Trick to make it 5-3 Summit at the half.
Summit opened the second half with some erratic play, and soon it was 5-5.  The Hilltoppers were turning the ball over, and the Royals were making them pay.  When Summit did have an opportunity, Oak Knoll goalie Jackie McCall -- who had a strong game -- was there for the stop.

Nonetheless, Summit took 6-5 and 7-6 leads in the second half -- on goals by Maggie Moriority and Meaghan Celmer -- but Oak Knoll leveled and got the eventual game-winner from Comizio.  The Hilltoppers had possession in the final minutes, but turned the ball over, and the the Royals did a nice job of playing keep away for the final minute and a-half of the contest.
"We were sloppy, too many turnovers." said Summit Head Coach Mike Walsh.  "They are an excellent team, and their goalie had a very good game, but we were too static on offense."
Summit is now 2-1 on the season, and will travel to Columbia on April 4 before returning home to face Ridgewood April 7.  Face-off at the Upper High School Turf Field is 4 p.m.

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.
