Letter to the Editor Regarding Postponement of Union County Deer Management Program

January 5, 2014 at 3:08 PM

In light of the inclement weather that is occurring and is forecast, the start of the Union County Deer Management Program that was scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, January 6, has been delayed to Wednesday, January 8.

Union County Deer Management Program

Please be advised that the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently approved a resolution that authorizes deer management programs in 2014 in five Union County parks and one municipal park.

The resolution continues the annual removal of deer by marksmen selected by and acting as agents of the County at the Watchung Reservation, Passaic River Park in Summit, and Lenape Park.  It also extends hunting by marksmen selected by the County to Ash Brook Reservation, which had been hunted previously by a private contractor and a private hunting club.  The deer management effort at Lenape Park is being expanded to include Nomahegan Park as well.  And at the request of the City of Linden, the County will administer and coordinate deer management activity as a shared service at the City’s Hawk Rise Sanctuary.

Hunting in all of those parks will occur on Mondays from January 6 to February 3.  As in the past, the parks will not be closed during the conduct of these programs.  In the event of a holiday (January 20) or inclement weather on a Monday, the hunting activity will be moved to Wednesday of that week.  Inclement weather on Wednesday would push the program to Friday.

The attached Program Guidelines explain the deer management program in great detail.  I would ask that you please share this information with your staffs as you see fit.  You may share this information with the general public, or direct people with inquiries of a factual nature to the Union County website at http://ucnj.org/community/parks-community-renewal/wildlife-management/deer/.  If someone is interested in getting on the mailing list to participate in this program in a future year, they can do so through that same website.

Deer management can be a controversial subject.  If you or your staff are approached, at a facility or by telephone or e-mail, by someone who is rendering an opinion for or against hunting or this program, or who is asking for more information than that which is provided in the Program Guidelines, you should immediately refer them to me at 908-789-3682 or dbernier@ucnj.org.  If you become aware of a situation relative to the deer management program that should be addressed quickly, please contact me on my cell phone at 908-451-1948.

All costs for the conduct of this deer management program will be borne by the County of Union and the individual hunters.  There will be no costs to the affected municipalities, though we certainly hope that residents will experience relief from deer impacts as a result of these programs.  It is expected that about half of the venison that will derive from this program will be used to feed the needy and the homeless through the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

If you have any questions or need clarification, please feel free to contact me directly.

If you are part of the In-House Worksheet process, please review the worksheet that has been posted at 01-06 – 02-03-14  DEER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, and initial the worksheet where appropriate.
