SPARTA, NJ - Steven Levinson attended his final Sparta Township Council meeting as interim township manager on Tuesday. Levinson was hired as interim in September 2013 following the departure of former manager, David Troast. Levinson had previously served as township business administrator and director of Health and Welfare for Rockaway Township.
Levinson had "praise for the core of professionals that serve Sparta township." He said, "They needed to know they were supported by the Town Council and mayor." Further, he said "the township really does have exceptional department heads."
Mayor Molly Whilesmith appreciated the ease with which Levinson integrated himself into the municipality, working well with the township employees and council members alike. "It was a pleasure working with you," she said.
Deputy Mayor Jerry Murphy said Levinson was a "very positive influence."
The new township manager William Close was appointed on January 28 and will be starting on March 17. Close was previously Business Administrator in Dover. He has 30 years of experience in the position with both Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees in Public Administration from North Carolina State University.
