BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Berkeley Heights Girl Scout Isabelle Lin is holding First Aid and Community Health sessions at the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad Open Houses scheduled for September.

This project is part of Lin's Gold Award project, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. "When I was developing my Gold Award project, I knew I wanted to include my passion for first aid and healthcare," said LIn. "At my high school, I was lucky enough to take classes in first aid skills and become certified in CPR and basic life support."

She recognized that not everyone knows what to do in an emergency situation, which is why she came up with the idea of holding informative first aid and community health sessions. The purpose of this event is to educate the community on first aid skills, including AED use and Stop the Bleed, and provide them with first aid supplies like bandages and antibacterial wipes.

The First Aid and Community Health sessions will take place at the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad (BHVRS). There will be a total of 6 one-hour-long sessions during the BHVRS’s open house hours in September, which are every Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. The event will take place over the course of three open houses, however, feel free to drop in anytime during the two hours the squad is open.

Lin walked through the program. "At the start of the session, I will be passing around a free first aid booklet that details prevention methods, symptoms, and treatments of over 10 common injuries including choking, severe allergic reactions, nosebleeds and first degree burns." She added, "I will then be directing and assisting the EMTs volunteers in holding live presentations demonstrating the correct methods of treatment for CPR/AED use and severe bleeding injuries. After participants get the chance to practice their newly learned skills, they can move into the next room where there will be a table full of first aid supplies that families can use to make personalized first aid kits."

The sessions will be held on Sept. 10, Sept. 17 and Sept. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad located at 378 Snyder Ave. in Berkeley Heights.  Families, friends, children of all ages are all welcome.
