Some general tips from the Long Hill Township Police Department:
If someone can’t be home to receive package deliveries, ship to a work address or have a neighbor remove them from your porch and keep them for you.

Always lock your residence and vehicle doors. (Double check all basement and first floor windows)

Leave interior lights, a TV and/or a radio on when away from home.

Activate your residential alarm system (If installed), when you leave the residence.

Lock your garage door leading into your residence.

Stop your mail/newspaper or arrange for a neighbor to pick it up while you’re out of town.

Do not leave phones, purses, packages or other items of value in plain sight or unattended in a car, and ensure that your vehicle is locked.

If you are going away on vacation, please contact the police department and place you residence on our vacation/vacant house check list.

Hide all expensive and sentimental jewelry/valuables in an alternative room(s) as opposed to a jewelry box and/or bedroom dresser drawers.

IMMEDIATELY report ALL suspicious vehicles or persons to police.
