WARREN, NJ - The low-flying jet headed away from Newark Airport seen and heard around 5 p.m. today, Sunday July 13 was an Air India 777 that had reportedly experienced a bird strike shortly after take- off from Newark.

After circling over New Jersey for close to an hour, the plane has safely returned and landed at Newark Airport.

Update: Later Sunday night, a bird strike was ruled out. The flight with 313 passengers onboard was forced to return to Newark Liberty International Airport after an engine on the Boeing 777 appeared to overheat and catch fire, according to airport officials.

The officials previously said a bird strike may have caused the fire but later ruled that out after conducting an investigation, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
