MADISON, NJ - After being involved in several low-scoring pitchers' duels this season, the Madison varsity softball team proved up to the task of outscoring an opponent in a high-scoring hitters' game on Tuesday.
Caitlyn Massaro collected three hits--including two doubles--and four RBI and finished off the game with some stellar relief pitching to steer Madison to an 8-7 victory over Whippany Park in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 2 state tournament.
The Dodgers (18-4) trailed, 7-6, before scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jill Caruso went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI for Madison, which totaled 11 hits. Alyssa DiBiasse scored three runs in the victory, going 2-for-4. Mackie Goodwin had a double and a run scored in the victory.
After Whippany Park scored five runs to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the fifth, Massaro came on to pitch 2 1/3 innings of outstanding relief, allowing just one hit and no runs.
