NEW BRUNSWICK - A 25-year-old Perth Amboy man was arrested today and charged with fatally stabbing a pregnant woman in Perth Amboy Thursday night, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey in a joint statement with Perth Amboy police Chief Roman McKeon.
Benny M. Pichardo was charged with murder for killing Esmeralda Cedeno, 20, who was six months pregnant, Carey said.
He said that a 9:09 p.m. Thursday, Perth Amboy police responding to a call went to the intersection of Sayre Avenue and Steadman Place and found Cedeno with multiple stab wounds.
Cedeno, was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy where she was pronounced dead, the prosecutor said. He said the baby did not survive.
Autopsies on both are pending with the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office. Carey said.
He did not give any information of how Pichardo knew the women, how police identified him as a suspect, or where he was arrested.

Pichardo is also charged with hindering his apprehension and possession of weapon for an unlawful purpose, both third-degree crimes, authorities said. Pichardo is being held at the Middlesex County Correction Center in North Brunswick, pending a detention hearing.
