MAPLEWOOD, NJ ― In celebration of the holiday season, Maplewood Community Music (MCM) will present two concerts on Saturday, December 14 at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts, 10 Durand Road, Maplewood, NJ. As part of Dickens Village, the Maplewood Community Concert Band will perform from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. followed by Swing Town from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. The concerts are both family-friendly, free and open to the public.
Tom McGee will lead the Maplewood Community Concert Band in its annual holiday performance. Selections will include J. S. Bach’s Arioso from Cantata No. 156, Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance Op. 46, No. 8 as well as seasonal compositions such as The Eighth Candle – Prayer and Dance for Hanukkah and The Bells of Christmas.
An exciting addition to this year’s program, MCM’s newest ensemble, the Silvertones (flute choir), will make their public debut.
Swing Town, Maplewood’s own community big band under the direction of Ben Williams, will perform swing versions of holiday favorites featuring the band’s talented vocalists including Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Feliz Navidad, and Winter Wonderland. A variety of traditional classics, swinging rock tunes and modern big band favorites will round out the program.
“Our organization was created more than 10 years ago so musicians could get together to play music and bring music to our community,” said Susan Williams, the co-founder of Maplewood Community Music. “Our holiday concert is a special opportunity to share the spirit of the season with local families.”
Hot beverages and a variety of delicious baked goods will be available for purchase. 100% of the proceeds will be used by MCM to further its mission to support local amateur musicians and cultural arts in the Maplewood area.
Mark your calendar with MCM’s upcoming performances including Swing Town’s Annual Holiday Wine & Dine & Dance at Highland Place on Wednesday, December 18th at 8:00 p.m., and the Maplewood Community Concert Band’s Annual Children’s Concert—with new and exciting post-concert activities—at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.
About Maplewood Community Music
MCM is a local non-profit organization dedicated to enriching and inspiring musicians and audiences of all ages in the Maplewood area. MCM musicians, mostly hobbyists, volunteer their time to provide free public concerts, concerts for veterans and seniors and performances at numerous community events. Partnering with local organizations including our schools, MCM presents and supports community and youth enrichment programs.
All MCM musicians are volunteers and all concerts are free. Concerts are made possible with support from the Maplewood Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs and through public donations.
The Maplewood Community Concert Band always has room for new members and welcomes all musicians (even rusty ones!) with at least high school level playing experience. Why not make a New Year’s resolution to recapture the enjoyment of playing and performing? Dust off your instrument and stop by the next rehearsal on Wednesday, January 8th at 7:30 p.m. at the DeHart Community Center, 120 Burnet Ave, Maplewood.
