Playwrite, actress and Maplewood Mom, Sandy Rustin

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Local mom Sandy Rustin is an actress, playwrite, blogger, audiobook narrator, Co-Founder and Co-Artisitic Director of Midtown Direct Rep, the theater company in residence at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC), and a busy, busy woman.

On Sunday, May 12, she will be performing in a special Mother’s Day show in New York City called “Listen to Your Mother,” at Peter Norton Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street on the Upper West Side.

"Listen To Your Mother" is a growing annual event that includes productions this year in 24 cities, featuring live readings in honor of Mother's Day. The New York City production features Rustin and 14 other prominent local writers and performers telling their own tales of motherhood, some poignant and some humorous.

Rustin’s involvement in the show began when she met one of the producers at the “Blog Her” conference in New York.  She fell in love with the idea of “actual moms, reading true stories, and giving motherhood a voice in a natural and organic way,” she said.

After writing her proposed piece and auditioning for the show in February, she was thrilled to be selected as one of the performers.  Her own mother will be flying in to join her at the show, as will the moms of many of the performers.

"I would really like to bring a production of “Listen to Your Mother” to SOPAC next year," she said.

Rustin co-wrote a sketch comedy musical about parenthood, “Rated P” (for parenthood), which was an Off-Broadway smash in 2012 and will start playing at regional theatres around the country this summer. Her one-act comedy, Fireworks, recently won the 7th annual Nor'Eastern Playwriting competition, and is about to be produced by the Vermont Repertory Actors’ Theater.  She recently performed in a reading of her own full-length play, The Cottage, as part of the SOPAC Loft Reading Series.

She has lived in Maplewood with her family for four years.  “We moved in two weeks before our second son was born,” she said, laughing about the unconventional timing.

Rustin appears regularly at The Upright Citizen’s Brigade in “Gravid Water” (named "Best Improv Show” by Time Out NY), will be appearing on The Amy Schumer Show on Comedy Central and is also developing material for Nickelodeon's new network, Nick Mom. Remember I told you she was busy?
