MAPLEWOOD, NJ - It was a little cool and cloudy for a day at the pool, but Maplewood's dogs did not seem to mind as they swam and ran around at the second annual Dog Days of Summer event at the Maplewood Community Pool on Saturday.
One family who was there with their Golden Retriever, Piper, said said they have been looking forward to the day as Piper loves to swim and catch balls. Piper became their pet when she came up for adoption after playing "Puppy #15" in "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" on Broadway, and the family added that there are other dogs in Maplewood who were once also puppies in the show.
Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca noted that there appeared to be a few less dogs and their people this year then at last year's inaugural event.
Melissa Mancuso, Maplewood's Director of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, came-up with the idea for Dog Days of Summer after learning of similar events at other towns, and thought it was a perfect fit for the dog-friendly town of Maplewood. Mancuso said she was happy to see so many pets and their owners enjoying the event.
The Dog Days of Summer is the last event of the season at the Maplewood Pool.
