MAPLEWOOD, NJ – It was a family affair at the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony for Pimento Grill, the new restaurant on Springfield Avenue featuring authentic Jamaican cuisine. The Barnes family welcomed Deputy Mayor Kathy Leventhal and Township Committeewoman India Larrier to help celebrate.
Devon Barnes considered opening a few different types of businesses before deciding to open Pimento Grill with his daughters Davona and Dahina. However, the appeal of starting a restaurant where he could bring the true flavors of the Jamaican food he grew up with was too much to resist.
“For a long time, when we wanted to go out as a family, we couldn’t find anywhere that was better than our own home cooking,” said Davona. “We would have to drive across the bridge to New York to find the good stuff. We wanted to bring that closer to home.”
Pimento Grill features dishes made fresh from scratch with great care taken in the preparation and ingredients. Dishes ranging from Jerk Chicken, Ox-Tails & Beans, and Curried Goat, to Sweet & Sour Chicken, Brown Stew Chicken and Escoveitch Red Snapper provide the authentic spices, aromas and flavors of Jamaica.
“The feedback so far has been tremendous,” Devon said of their first few weeks in business. “We love Maplewood. It is so warm and welcoming. The diversity makes it special.”
Devon points out that Jamaican cuisine is a mixture of influences from all over the world, including Chinese, Indian and Portuguese flavors.
“The Jamaican motto is ‘Out of many, comes one people,’ and the cuisine is a reflection of that motto.”
Pimento Grill offers dine-in, catering, take-out, and the spacious, cheerful dining room may also be rented for special events. Parking is available in the lot at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Indiana Street. Online ordering and delivery are available through their website www.pimentogrill.biz as well as www.deals4meals.com.
