Mara’s Bakery and Café Wins Major Award

September 21, 2013 at 12:00 AM

FANWOOD, NJ – Mara’s Bakery and Café in Fanwood won the Red Tricycle “Totally  Awesome” Award for Best Cupcake, Bakery and Sweet Shop in the New York Metro Area.

Red Tricycle is an online city guide for parents and kids to use to plan activities and Red Tricycle’s Totally Awesome Awards is a 100 percent reader-driven online recognition program for the baby, kid and parenting industry and their mission is to help busy parents have more fun with their kids.

“There were nine other finalists and I was surprised, yet tremendously pleased that we won,” said Marci Semel, owner of the Fanwood Mara’s Bakery and Café. “We are ‘newbies’ as we only opened in April and to win over more established bakeries like Crumbs is a big feather in our cap.”

Mara Magley, namesake for the franchise, went to New York with Semel for the awards party last week, along with Amy Boroff of BeCraftful.  “We are really proud of Marci and her team – they have done a tremendous job of launching the first franchise in Fanwood and winning this award less than six months after opening is truly amazing.”

Other local businesses were nominated for the Totally Awesome Awards – Be Craftful was in the top 10 for two categories – Best Toy and Book Story and Best Art Class for Kids.  Picasso’s Basement was also in the top 10 for Best Art Class and Carolyn Ann Ryan Photography made the top ten for Best Family Photographer.

“I think Fanwood has shown that you don’t have to be the biggest to be the best,” said Semel.  “It really shows the power of social media when our small businesses can win in a contest that covers the whole New York Metro area!”
