Matthew Raabe, 25, Arrested in West Caldwell for Third Degree Laptop Theft

February 25, 2013 at 4:56 PM

WEST CALDWELL, NJ - The West Caldwell Police Department have arrested Matthew Raabe, 25, in the case of a stolen laptop computer from Sky Club Fitness 24 / 7. Corporal Brian Joy and Detective Sergeant Shaun O’Dowd discovered the perpetrator by reviewing the fitness center’s video tape; Raabe was apparently “immediately recognized” by the officers.

On Friday, Sky Club Fitness, located at 750 Bloomfield Avenue, West Caldwell, contacted police before noon to report that a laptop had been stolen from one of their facility’s lockers. One of their clients from Caldwell had been exercising while his locker was opened, and his computer taken.

Police went to Raabe’s West Caldwell home where he admitted to being the thief; he was charged with 3rd Degree Theft. New Jersey takes charges of theft (under NJ Statute 2C:20-1) very seriously. Third Degree Theft is charged when the item stolen is worth more than $500, but not more than $75,000. The penalty for Third Degree Theft carries with it three to five years in jail, fines and probation

Chief Michael J. Bramhall noted that Raabe was Released on Recognizance (ROR) which means released after posting bail and agreeing to show up for court at a later date. Raabe’s initial court appearance is set for Wednesday, March 6.

"The County Prosecutors Office will review the case and decides if it is heard in the County Superior Court or returned to the Municipal Court in West Caldwell," added Bramhall.

On Monday, Chief Bramhall put out the following statement:

At 11:50 AM on Friday 2/22/13, Patrol Officers responded to Sky Fitness (Formally Anytime Fitness) 750 Bloomfield Avenue, on a report of a stolen laptop computer from a locker.

A 32 year-old resident of Caldwell was “working out” and while doing so, his locker was entered and his laptop computer was taken.

Cpl. Brian Joy, who took the initial report, and Detective Sergeant Shaun O’Dowd reviewed the facility video tape and observed an actor enter and leave the locker room shortly after and exit the facility.  The actor was immediately recognized by the officer’s as Matthew Raabe, 25 years old, of West Caldwell.

Officers went to Raabe’s residence, where he admitted to the theft and was arrested and transported to headquarters for processing.   Raabe was charged with a 3rd Degree Theft and was released ROR with a return court date of March 6, 2013.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
