PATERSON, NJ- Following his own calls for a thorough and independent investigation into the incident, Mayor Andre Sayegh has convened a meeting of approximately a dozen community leaders to discuss the Friday arrest and ensuing firestorm born from a video posted online that purports to show one of the arresting officers punching the suspect.
Included in the meeting is Zellie Thomas, a local activist and founder of the Black Lives Matter movement in the city. Prior to the meeting Thomas expressed his “disgust and outrage” with the way the incident was handled and disappointment that the police, he believes, lack training in how to handle tense situations in a non-verbal way, “without resorting to violence.
The suspect, it has been widely reported, is “deaf and mute.”
Unless he hears of significant policy reforms to prevent this from happening again Thomas said he “will not be satisfied.”
