SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - McGinn Elementary School was recently recognized as one of 25 public elementary schools in New Jersey that successfully implemented the Healthy U program in the 2013-14 school year.
“This is our first year working closely with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA to create a healthier environment in our schools," explained Dr. Sasha Slocum, McGinn Elementary School Principal. "This grant gives us the tools and support to make a difference in the lives of students and their families—in school and at home."
Through Healthy U, students learn from experience that being physically active every day can be fun and they are developing good nutrition habits, such as choosing water, fruit and vegetables over other options. "We are seeing more energy and a greater focus in school,” added Slocum.
“The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is proud to be a part of the team that brings this program to our local school," said Shannon Frank, School Age Child Care Director of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. "We were honored to be able to present this plaque on behalf of the NJ YMCA State Alliance and The Horizon Foundation in recognition of the commitment this staff and administration has to providing and promoting a healthier environment for our kids."
