Melchionna Moving to Center Midfield for Chatham Field Hockey Team

August 24, 2013 at 9:32 AM

CHATHAM, NJ -  Danielle Melchionna, the leading scorer from 2012, will move from forward to center midfield and there will be a sophomore in goal when the Chatham Field Hockey team opens its season this fall.

Coach Jeremy Heinze is only in his fifth day of practice, but he aleady knows that Melchionna will be needed in the midfield.

"We had the luxury of playing her at center forward last year," Heinze said. "You need your better players to touch the ball as much as possible and that's why we need her to play center midfield."

Melchionna had a goal and an assist last season when Chatham defeated Hopewell Valley, 2-1, in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 quarterfinals. Chatham finished with a 15-5 mark, bowing to Warren Hills in the sectional semifinals.

Sophomore goalies Gislina Saul and Emily Buckman are competing for the starting job.

Chatham got its work in during the hot afternoon sun on Wednesday, but also found a way to keep cool and have some fun during the practice at Haas Field.
