Members of North Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Greet Newark School Children with 1,000 Bottles of Water on First Day of School

NEWARK, NJ, Sept. 3, 2019 -- Shouts of support, smiles and stacks of water bottles were awaiting Newark’s Avon Avenue students when they arrived for their first day of school.  Members of Delta Sigma Theta’s Sorority, Inc. North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC) were among the hundreds of parents, school officials and other supporters who were on hand during Avon Avenue school’s first day of school welcome back celebration.  2020 Census material was also given out to the parents by NJAC’s Social Action committee to raise awareness of the upcoming census and the impact it can have on the community if they are under-counted.

NJAC members purchased over 1,000 bottles of water to give to Newark’s school children as the city’s water safety crisis has impacted thousands in the community who remain concerned about the water supply.  Attached to each bottle was an encouraging message for students as they embark on a new school year.  The messages state, “Reach for the Stars”, “Don’t Let Anyone Dull Your Sparkle”, and “Throw Kindness Around Like Confetti”.

"We believe in public service and giving back to the community", says NJAC's President Dorita Newsome-Dobbins. “We're here to support our children and let them know we believe in them and know they are going to do amazing things this school year."
