SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Assistant Superintendent for Administration Jim Memoli will serve as acting superintendent of the South Orange/Maplewood School District, the Board of Education president announced today.
Memoli will step up to the position July 1 while the board seeks an interim superintendent, said President Elizabeth T. Daugherty in a letter to the SOMSD community. “A number of potential interims have been contacted to find out if they are available,” she said.
Current Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne is leaving the district for a position in New Rochelle, N.Y., at the end of the month.
A school board committee will interview interim superintendent candidates, and the person chosen will serve the district while it searches for a permanent superintendent, according to Daugherty. The target date for the hire is Jan. 1.
Daugherty said the board plans to hire a search firm at its Jan. 16 meeting, which is expected to hold forums in the next few weeks to obtain input from staff, parents, students and the general community “on the highest priority qualifications of a superintendent for our district.”
According to Daughtery, the district also plans to conduct electronic surveys.
The superintendent plays a “pivotal role” in the district and the community, Daugherty said.
