Memorial Service Honoring Life of Raptor Trust Founder Len Soucy Saturday, June 28

June 27, 2014 at 5:31 PM

MILLINGTON, NJ - Len Soucy, the founder of the Raptor Trust in Millington, passed away on June 11.  Memorial services  will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 1 p.m. in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts on the Drew University campus in Madison.

The Raptor Trust says- Len Soucy made a life of making lives better. Whether saving avian lives here at The Raptor Trust, educating others on the diversity and value of wild animals in our lives, or studying raptor populations... so that we humans could learn more about them and live better with them, Len’s was truly a life well lived.
In honor of that lifetime of work toward the protection and preservation of all things wild, especially birds, and the educational opportunities he labored to present to us all, we have established the Leonard J. Soucy Jr. Memorial Fund for projects that would be meaningful to him. His commitment to a thriving avian population will live on, with special support for new ideas and approaches from the Memorial Fund.

According to The Raptor Trust website,  Len Soucy was a naturalist, photographer, lecturer, author, raptor researcher and avian rehabilitator. He holds a master bird-banding license from the U.S. Department of Interior and has been banding wild raptors for over 35 years. Soucy has published much scientific information gathered from field studies.  Len was the founder and director of the non-profit organization, The Raptor Trust. (TRT)

Begun by Len and his wife Diane over 30 years ago as a modest backyard avian care center, the Trust has grown to be one of the largest, most comprehensive facilities of its kind in the nation. From 1982 until 2005 over 60,000 hawks, owls and other wild birds have been cared for at TRT. Nearly half of them have been returned to the wild. 100 unreleasable raptors permanently reside at the Trust.

An on-site education center was added to the facility in 1989. Len Soucy's work has been recognized locally and nationally, and he has received awards from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the New Jersey Veterinary Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States, to name a few.

In 1986 he was honored with The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 1988 Len received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Drew University.

Tears Are Good, They Let The Sadness Out

Jackie Kennedy and Coretta Scott King were our nation’s role models for mourning in the 1960’s and in the decades since. They were great role models for our nation at a time of great unrest and anxiety, but I would say they were not the role models we needed when it came to grieving our ...

Falling by Jane Green

Falling by Jane Green (Berkley, 2016)

Every now and again I just love a mindless romance novel, and I've been a huge fan of Jane Green's since her first book, Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans. Despite being classified as “chick lit,” the character and plot of Jemima J. has stayed with me for sixteen years after first reading it because the story ...
