MHS Boys LAX Team's Season Ends After Hard-Fought Year

May 21, 2014 at 9:35 PM

MILLBURN, NJ - After a roller-coaster season of highs and lows, the Millburn boys lacrosse team’s season reached finality after a crushing loss to Morristown last Saturday by a score of 8-2.  The Millers ended the year with a record of 4-13.

Many players found the season-ending results to be less than adequate. This ending was even more sour for the graduating seniors on the team who have participated on the team for several years. Among this group is senior-captain, Gabe Greenberg.

Greenberg said, “As my lacrosse career has come to an end, it’s been a pleasure playing with all of my friends since we were little and it will be one of my greatest memories when I look back years from now.”

This was certainly a transitional year for the Millers. The Millers did not only have to become adjusted to the leadership style of this year’s new coach, Bill McCutcheon, but also were placed into a more difficult division. The combined factors may have in part led to a less than satisfactory year for many of the players.

Despite the difficulties, the Millers did in fact have many positives to take away from this year’s season. The Millers were able to win their season opener against Caldwell in late March, as well as defeat Columbia High School in a double-overtime thriller in the first round of this season’s Essex County Tournament.

Throughout the year, the Millers’ lacrosse team had many contributors who helped the team through goals, saves, and assists. Senior Gabe Greenberg, led the team with 20 goals on the year, followed by junior Dan Zahka who added 15 goals during the year. Sophomore, Trevor Stack led the team with 16 assists. Stack is an allusive player who has two more years to contribute to Millburn’s lacrosse program. Sophomore goalie, Wes Moshier was also a substantial addition to the Millers 2014 squad. Despite getting injured late in the season, Moshier was able to supply the Millers with 115 saves on the year.

Next season, the Millers are striving to accomplish loftier goals. This is a message that resonates with many players who will be coming back to play next season including junior defenseman, Jack Bowen. “As a team, we aspire to perform on a higher level next season. We have set strict standards that each player will be required to implement into their off-season training. In addition, our team is serving the greater Millburn/Short Hills area with an array of community service projects. All in all, next year we will strive to accomplish greatness, come together as a program, and reap the benefits of hard work.”

Even though this was not a “banner year” for the Millers’ LAX team, the team appears to be focused on specific goals they hope to accomplish next season.  Though the team has no more games to be played on turf, there will continue to be team-building activities including community service and team dinners. The team will conclude their season with their end of year banquet on June 3.
