WEST ORANGE, NJ - The Michael T. McCormick Memorial Foundation will hold its Fifth Annual Scholarship Event on Wednesday, June 4 at Mayfair Farms, 481 Eagle Rock Avenue, beginning at 6:00 pm.
The event will include a celebration of Michael's life and the award of scholarships to graduating seniors in his honor. Michael and his best friend Vinnie Simone died in an automobile accident near his home on August 2, 2009, one day after his nineteenth birthday. To honor their son's memory, Karen and Mike McCormick, along with their daughter Meaghan, started the foundation to help West Orange seniors as they enter college.
This year's recipients will receive $33,500 in scholarships. To date the foundation has provided $75,000.00 in scholarships to students from Seton Hall Prep, where Michael attended high school, and West Orange High School.
In addition to the current Board of Directors, which is comprised of Mike, Karen and Meaghan McCormick, Kathleen MacKenzie, Brian McCormick, Barry Geltzeiler, Sayre Geltzeiler, Peter Pannucci, Thomas Callahan, and Jesse Bielecke, two new board members, Stephanie Vanderhoof and Joanne Morgenroth, have been added.
The MTM Foundation Mission Statement seeks to"honor the memory of Michael T. McCormick, Jr. by encouraging young people to attain higher education so that they may achieve personal growth and reach their career goals."
By receiving financial relief the foundation hopes to provide the recipient with the ability to better prepare themselves for life’s many challenges. The Foundation seeks to support the recipient to realize success within their families, communities and beyond.
The cocktail reception will feature a Tricky Tray, raffle, and door prize, along with performances by local musicians. The event will also raise money for next year's scholarship program. Tickets are $40 for students, $75 for adults; $125 also includes tricky tray tickets and program recognition.
Noted Karen McCormick, "The formation of the Michael T. McCormick, Jr. Memorial Foundation has given our family a reason to look forward. We have a higher purpose and together with our loyal and unbelievably supportive Board members, we put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making this Foundation something that will support students well into the future".
