Michelle Casalino, Candidate for West Orange Board of Education

October 7, 2012 at 1:56 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ -  Michelle Lemma Casalino is seeking a third term on the West Orange Board of Education.  Michelle is a lifelong resident of West Orange.  She is married to her high school sweetheart, Tony, and have three children: Dana, a recent college graduate; Anthony, a college senior; and Joe, a sophomore at West Orange High School. Michelle currently works as a Regional Business Director for Madison Commercial Real Estate Services.  All have been educated in the West Orange Public School system.

A long time community volunteer and organizer, Ms. Casalino has served on several boards as an an active member in such organizations as the Eagle Rock Civic Association, West Orange Rotary, West Orange PAL, Mountaineer Touchdown Club, Mountaineer Lacrosse Club, the Girl Scouts, and Redwood, Liberty, and WOHS PTAs.  She helped to raised over 150K for the Redwood School playground and co-founded the Edison and Liberty Middle Schools After School Programs with the Community House.

In her past two terms on the West Orange School Board, Ms. Casalino has accomplished much for not only the students of the West Orange School district, but the taxpayer as well. Michelle initiated the push for Reregistration in the school district, which identifies, and continues to do so, students that are not legal residents of West Orange.  This has saved the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs.  Last year she was instrumental in lowering the BOE budget millions of dollars, so that not only was there not an increase in taxes, but a reduction. She was integral to other cost cutting efforts, such as reduction of custodial overtime, increased permit fees for school grounds usage, promotion of outside special education students to attend school in West Orange (with paid tuition), refinancing of bonds to reduce debt, restructuring of busing, working with West Orange Township to develop shared services, power and utilities cost reductions, teacher contract negotiations to reduce costs for tuition reimbursement, employee benefit thresholds, and prescription benefits, and more.

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...

My Epic Beauty Fails

One day as I was looking around a high-end cosmetics store for a new lipstick, a “beauty expert” approached me and said that I was so stunning I should forget the lipstick, and get a lip plumper instead. At first I wondered why I needed a lip plumper if I was already so stunning. But then I thought, “Now here is someone wearing a badge that says, ‘beauty expert,’ so ...
