MILLBURN, NJ – Miller sophomore Jeff Plump’s two-goal game led Millburn to a 3-0 victory over Newark Tech High School in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday.
Millburn got to work early scoring their first goal in the seventh minute when junior midfielder Greg Rudman sent a corner kick into the box, setting up Plump for the header to the far side of the net.
“"It was very important to get ahead early,” Millers’ head coach Jason Robinson said. “They had a couple really good forwards and good midfielders. It would have been a lot of defense had we been down.”
Millburn won the possession battle in the first half, giving them multiple scoring opportunities on Newark Tech’s side of the field. The Millers cashed in on their second goal when they put pressure on the Terrier’s defense and sent a cross into the box. After keeper Fernando Orellano deflected a header attempt, junior midfielder Seb Deguines followed up by launching a shot into the back of the net.
“We just wanted to play good soccer,” Robinson said. “We are just trying to snowball in the right direction.”
Down two goals at the half, the Terriers pressured the Miller defense, but Millburn goalkeeper Marc Langendorff controlled the game by making key saves and slowing down the tempo to throw off the Terriers’ aggressive playing style.
Plump recorded his second goal of the game after sneaking behind Newark Tech’s defensive line and faking out the keeper for an easy score to put the game out of reach.
The Millers advance to the quarterfinals round of the tournament and will play again at home on Wednesday.
