May 30, 2014 at 10:25 PM

MILLBURN, NJ -- The Millburn boys tennis team’s season concluded with a familiar result on Friday afternoon as the team defeated Haddonfield high school to claim its third Tournament of Champions (TOC) title in the past three seasons.

The Millburn Millers tennis squad gained the title after a 3-2 showing over the Haddonfield Bulldogs at Mercer County Park in West Windsor.

In addition to claiming the TOC title, the Millers also won both the group and sectional titles this season.

With the win on Friday, the Millers will end the year with a 29-2 record. The winning season included only two losses, which came against Newark Academy and Episcopal Academy.

On Friday, in the first singles slot, Millburn’s Tyler Schick soundly defeated Haddonfield’s Max Oberholtzer by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Junior Jon Atwater also helped clinch the Miller’s victory at second singles, where he dealt Tommy Dodson of Haddonfield a 4-6, 6-3, 4-1 loss. Haddonfield held the upper hand at third singles, where Millburn’s Jonathan Duan lost to Haddonfield’s Mike Alberto by 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.

The Millers and Bulldogs split the two doubles matchups. Haddonfield’s first doubles team of Anderson and Oberholtzer served up a win over Millburn’s Ginsburg and Shedlin pairing. The Miller’s second doubles squad of Knopp and Imegwu soundly beat Haddonfield’s Carr and Quickel team.

“Winning the TOC was always our main goal this season," said Schick, a junior. "Winning the tournament the past two years has put a lot of pressure on us, and we all worked hard this season and kept our focus. Now that we have won the TOC for the third straight year, it feels great."
