MILLBURN, NJ - Abraham and Sharon Brender of Millburn will be honored at the American Red Cross’ annual Celebrate Red! fundraising gala on Thursday, April 3, at The Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park.
These two local heroes are this year’s recipients of the annual Quinn Award. Longtime supporters of the Red Cross Preparedness and Health and Safety Services, their generosity through the Danielle Brender Fund, Inc., and enthusiasm for training the community in CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), has taught life-saving skills to countless individuals.
The Brender’s lost their daughter, Danielle, 14 years ago after suffering sudden cardiac arrest. Danielle’s death was attributed to Long QT Syndrome, an electrical disorder of the heart. The family was not aware she had this condition. Through Danielle’s death Sharon and Abraham learned the importance of Adult CPR/AED training, and over the last 13 years have arranged to have American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED training available to arm community members with life-saving skills. Program participants have learned how to perform CPR and use automatic external defibrillators, what to do if someone is choking, and how to respond to emergencies until advanced medical help arrives.
“Our family is honored to be recognized as Everyday Heroes and recipients of this year’s Quinn Award. I encourage the members of our community to take advantage of the services of the American Red Cross or volunteer and become an Everyday Hero,” said Sharon Brender. “Any adult can take a variety of health and safety classes, including Adult CPR/AED training. Household members can work together on a preparedness plan. And, people can give blood or make a financial donation.”
The annual fundraising gala will celebrate March is Red Cross Month and the impact its honorees have made in the community. In addition to the Brender’s, honorees include Verizon, recipient of the Corporate Hero Award; and the Jersey City Department of Public Safety, recipient of the Community Hero Award.
Proceeds from Celebrate Red! will benefit Red Cross programs and services such as, meals delivered to the homebound and elderly, linking military families during emergencies, life-saving training, disaster preparedness education, and disaster relief for families affected by local disasters such as home fires. During the months of January and February alone, Disaster Services volunteers responded to 102 home fires affecting 248 families in the region, helping more than 744 people with emergency assistance for temporary lodging, food and clothing as needed. The cost in direct assistance was $151,000.
