MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn high school varsity girls team ended last year’s season with a tough tournament of champions finale loss to Haddonfield High School. The Miller ladies have started off the 2013 season with an undefeated 12-0 record. Accumulatively through 12 matches, the Miller girls have dropped a total of 3 games and have won 57 games.
Many members of the squad are ecstatic about the undefeated start and hope to continue the streak. Millburn junior, Jane Barry said, “I'm really excited for the remaining weeks of our season. We're looking to build off last season's run and make it back to the Tournament of Champions. We've all put in a lot of hard work during the pre-season and our team is strong from top to bottom. The tennis season really flies by so I'm planning on enjoying every minute of it.”
Thus far in the Millers undefeated season, they conquered the feat of shutting out No. 14 Montclair Kimberley Academy, 5-0 in the Essex county tournament final round. Other notable victories for the Millers include a 5-0 defeat to the number 8 Newark Academy girls.
Freshman, Stephanie Schrage will play at first singles for Millburn this year. Junior Jane Barry will fill the second singles slot. Freshman, Samantha Siegel is slotted at third singles for the Millers. Seniors Stephanie Chen Schmidt and Sandy Xie will play at first doubles.
The team has very high expectations this season. Many players would like to see the Millers win the Tournament of Champions. Sandy Xie shares this feeling with the Miller squad. Xie said,
The Millers are ranked number two this season. Millburn is defending their Group 4 championship and their second place finish Tournament of Champions from last season. “The season so far has been very good. The team is a solid team with great players at each position. My personal goal for the team would be to win the Tournament of Champions. My goal for myself would be to win the states doubles tournament. But I know for sure that our team will go far and have a solid season.”
In the county team tournament, the first doubles team, Stephanie Chen Schmidt and Sandy Xie, took home the county doubles crown.
Stephanie Schrage, the miller girls first singles player is vying for the county singles title. The date for her title aspirations is still unknown.
The Millers have already accomplished significant goals such as becoming county champs and hope to keep the winning streak alive as they approach the second half of their season.
