Millburn High School Football Team Drops to 0-2 After Loss to West Side

September 29, 2013 at 3:50 PM

MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Millers football team was soundly defeated by West Side High School Friday night. The Millers went down by a score of 23-8 on a brisk night at Neigel Field in Millburn as they attempted to recover from their 0-1 start.

West Side’s Nasir Jones was a shinning star on Friday night. On defense, Jones had a sack and a fumble recovery. On offense, Jones rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

The first points in the game were in favor of West Side, when Shaquan Hall threw a 55-yard touchdown to Samir Venable.

The score was 6-0 in favor of West Side at the end of the first half. To add insult to injury, just before the half ended, star wide receiver, Gabe Greenberg came off the field with an injury. Greenberg left for the emergency room and received stiches for an apparent broken nose. When asked about his condition, Greenberg said, “I am feeling better, my nose just really hurts and I am keeping it bandaged up for now.” Greenberg said that he expects to be back on the field with the Millers in a week or two.

The Millers first got on the scoreboard with 10:23 left in the third quarter when the West Side quarterback kicked the ball into the back of the end zone for a safety making the score 6-2. The Millers continued the surge when Evan Steinfeld caught a 10-yard pass in the end zone from quarterback Jared Harris with just less than six minutes left in the third quarter.

However, West Side answered back in the third quarter when Nasir Jones had a 20-yard touchdown run. With the score, West Side expanded their lead to 13-8. Early in the fourth quarter, West Side added three more points when Mamadee Konnah kicked the ball through the uprights for a field goal.

The icing on the cake came with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter for West Side when Nasir Jones had a 55-yard run to make the final score 23-8 in favor.

With the victory, West Side advanced to 3-0 on the season, while Millburn fell to 0-2 after losing to rival, Livingston in their home opener. Next Week, West Side will head into Irvington for their fourth game of the year. The Millers will travel to travel to Barringer on Oct. 5 as they look for their first victory of the season.
