Millburn High School's Junior Varsity Baseball Team Undefeated

June 8, 2014 at 7:24 AM

MILLBURN, NJ - The Millers Junior Varsity Baseball Team went undefeated in regular season games this season.

In their exciting opener against Bloomfield  (away on April 2) they maintained a 5-5 tie in 9 innings of play.  Max Winstanley, the closing pitcher, got out of a pinch, when Bloomfield had bases loaded and no outs by striking out the final batter of the game after enabling shortstop, Ryan Adelman, to turn a double play.  Brian Lannino started the game pitching four innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out five batters.  Singles by Max Nesser, Jordan Brisgel and Michael Garawitz; a double by Adelman; and a triple by Garawitz led to the 5 runs being scored.

The JV also had two big wins over Seton Hall Prep this season, beating them on the road 7-5 on a cold and rainy day in April and then again at home in a huge come-back victory of 9-8.

In this past two weeks of play, Millburn outplayed Montclair Kimberly 12-2, West Essex 12-3 and Caldwell 12-0.

Montclair Kimberly didn’t have a chance on Tuesday, as Millburn Millers JV won in blowout fashion, 12-2, in six innings.

Cole Paulson got the win, allowing one run over 3 and ½ innings in which he struck out three and surrendered only two hits.  He relieved Max Winstanley, who struck out one and allowed only one run in 2 ½ innings of work.

The Millers first runs were scored in the top of the 2nd on line drive singles from Matt Jacob, Dean Schweinler and Richie Shiekofer and an over the fence home run by Nick Minter.  Three more runs were scored in the top of the first with doubles from Jordan Brisgel and Ryan Adelman and a single from Minter.  Another two were driven in during the 5th by Schweinler, Shiekofer and Garawitz singles and a double from Daniel Stern.  The final three runs came in the last inning on additional doubles from Brisgel and Adelman and a solid hit from Schweinler.

On Wednesday, West Essex fell to Millburn 12-3.

West Essex had no answer for pitcher, Jake Sauberman, who kept runners off the basepaths in his three innings of work.  He allowed no earned runs and struck out two.  Dean Schweinler recorded the win, striking out one and giving up only four hits over two innings.

The Millers took a quick 3 nothing lead in the first inning scoring on a single from Nick Minter, triples from Ryan Adelman and Max Nesser and a single from Matt Jacob.  An additional 3 runs were posted in the 2nd on singles from Shiekofer and Kyle Weissman, a triple from Minter and a sacrifice fly for Adelman.  The top of the 4th brought 4 more runs on the double by Adelman, single from Nesser and Shiekofer and a walk by Jake Sauberman.  The last run was scored in the 5th following a walk by Adelman and singles from Garawitz and Jacob.

The Millers won 14-0 in their last game on Tuesday, May 20th, away, at Delbarton High School.  Matt Abrams pitched 5 innings with 1 walk and 0 HITS!

Richard Shiekofer hit a grand slam to put them ahead 12-0 in the second.

The team scored 3 in the first and 9 in the second behind 2 doubles by Nick Minter, a triple by Max Nesser and double by Michael Garawitz.  Matt Jacob also ended the day with 2 hits.

The season ended with a 18-0-1 record for the Junior Varsity squad.
