NEWARK, NJ - An Essex County Grand Jury has returned a seven-count indictment charging Shawn Custis, 43, with the June 21, 2013 home invasion attack on a Millburn mother, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.
Custis was indicted by the grand jury on one count of attempted murder, one count of first degree robbery, one count of second degree burglary, one count of third degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of third degree criminal restraint, one count of third degree theft, and one count of second degree aggravated assault, according to Assistant Prosecutor Jamel Semper.
Custis’ last know address was Newark but he was arrested in New York City. He is being held on $750,000 bail.
He is accused of entering the woman’s Millburn home at approximately 10 a.m, where she was caring for her two young children. A video taken on the victim's nanny-cam and released by Millburn police shows Custis assaulting the woman as her daughter sat on the living room couch. The 18-month old son was asleep upstairs.
The victim sustained a concussion, chipped teeth, an injured lip, facial swelling and leg injuries.
Custis is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges in the indictment on Feb. 28, before the Honorable Peter J. Vazquez, Judge of the Superior Court.
The prosecutor’s office reminds us that these are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law or enter a guilty plea.
