Catherine Doty, a Millburn Middle School sixth grade language arts teacher, has been awarded a $25,000 Creative Writing Fellowship in Poetry by the National Endowment for the Arts.  Mrs. Doty is one of 42 poets from around the country selected from a pool of 1,063 applicants.  She is working on her third manuscript for publication.

Mrs. Doty has been teaching at Millburn Middle School for six years. Prior to that, as a Poet-in-Residence, she taught poetry to Millburn sixth graders for several years as part of a PTO Cultural Arts program.  She continues in that role today, teaching all sixth grade students about poetry each year.

Doty's previous books are “Just Kidding, Cartoons For Grownups” and “Momentum,” a volume of poems. As described by the publisher, her poems capture, “Those moments in childhood that shape who we will become, and all that will come to define our lives….With humor, affection and a sharp awareness of the larger truths that can be found even in the mundane, Doty explores the luminous, sometimes curious relics of memory.”
