DENVILLE, NJ – No. 1 seed Morris Knolls shut out No. 16 seed Kearny, 9-0, in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4, tournament on Thursday, May 16, in Denville, New Jersey. The newly minted Morris County Tournament champions outperformed Kearny offensively and defensively.

Kayla Turcios pitched a one-hit shutout, getting 12 strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Cayla Kleczkowski closed out the game in the seventh, recording two strikeouts and one hit.

Seven Golden Eagles got hits. Turcios nailed two singles and one double. Carley Mahan hit one single and one double. Brielle Eike produced three singles while Skye Eppel connected for two. Emily Meier, Nicole Florey and Mary Griffin contributed one single each.

As for RBIs, Mahan earned three; Eike and Eppel got two; and Turcios and Maggie Chinnadurai recorded one apiece.

The Golden Eagles (21-4) will host No. 8 seed Morristown (9-6) in the quarterfinals on Monday, May 20, at 4 p.m.
